CNN BUSINESS | Brace yourselves for an economic ‘hurricane,’ Jamie Dimon says

New York (CNN Business) – Jamie Dimon is no meteorologist, but the JPMorgan Chase CEO is predicting an economic “hurricane” caused by the war in Ukraine, rising inflation pressures and interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve.

“Right now it’s kind of sunny, things are doing fine. Everyone thinks the Fed can handle this,” Dimon said at a Bernstein conference. “That hurricane is right out there down the road coming our way.”  –read more–

CNN style Fashion | Celebrities gracing the ‘green’ carpet show Oscar-worthy sustainable dresses can still be glamorous

A Little over a decade ago, sustainability in fashion was a fringe issue. But today, it has become a major talking point — even at important red carpet events

Last year, many celebrities revisited old outfits in a bid to reduce waste. At the 2020 Oscars, Joaquin Phoenix wore the same Stella McCartney tuxedo he had sported at the Golden Globes, Baftas and several other award shows; Saoirse Ronan appeared in a Gucci gown with a bodice made using the surplus fabric from her Baftas look; and costume designer Arianne Phillips was in an upcycled version of the Moschino dress she first wore at the 2012 Academy Awards.  –read more–

The story of the late Charlotte Perriand is an inspiring tale of an adventurous designer whose ideas and creations left a lasting mark on homes around the world. But most people will have never heard of the pioneering maker — her place in history often overshadowed by her male contemporaries.

Starting off as a young furniture designer in Paris in the late 1920s, Perriand was one of very few women in the field at a time when society was often unwelcoming to working women. Le Corbusier, a giant of modern architecture, famously dismissed her when she first turned up at his office in search of a job after completing her studies. “We don’t do embroidery here,” he quipped condescendingly.  —read more

CNN BUSINESS | The most valuable startup in America is worth more than SpaceX

New York (CNN Business) – Move over, SpaceX and Instacart: Payments processing company Stripe is now the most valuable startup in America.

Stripe announced Sunday a new $600 million round of funding at a valuation of $95 billion, nearly tripling its last valuation of $36 billion.

The new funding vaults Stripe ahead of Instacart, which recently raised new financing at a valuation of $39 billion, as well as Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which is now valued at $74 billion, according to research firm CB Insights. (Still, Chinese TikTok owner Bytedance still easily retains the title of the world’s most valuable “unicorn” startup at $140 billion.)

Stripe has gotten a boost thanks to the pandemic-fueled surge in demand for online and mobile commerce.  —read more

(CNN) – March is National Women’s History Month, but since women are pretty historic year-round, it begs the question: Why March? Is this month significant to women’s history, or is it just an arbitrary month on the calendar?

The answer involves a little bit of history and a little bit of coincidence.   —read more—

Zillow will now make cash offers for homes based on its ‘Zestimates’ | CNN BUSINESS

CNN BUSINESS | Zillow will now make cash offers for homes based on its ‘Zestimates’

New York (CNN Business)  – Zillow is no longer just an online platform for browsing available homes or for creeping on the value of your neighbor’s house. In recent years, the company has also begun actually buying, fixing up and selling homes itself through a new division called Zillow Offers — a major shift in its business model.

On Thursday, the company announced a new feature aimed at streamlining the process for homeowners considering selling to Zillow.

For certain homes, Zillow’s “Zestimate” — the online estimate of the home’s value — will now represent an initial cash offer from the company to buy the property. That could mean an even quicker timeline for homeowners looking to close a sale without going through the hassle of a formal listing, or a source of helpful data for would-be sellers who want to know how much money they’ll have to buy their next house.  –read more

Law enforcement facing onslaught of coronavirus scams that could last for years | CNN

CNN | Law enforcement facing onslaught of coronavirus scams that could last for years

(CNN)  One of the most disturbing coronavirus scams Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has seen starts with a phone call.

The number looks like it’s coming from a health care or government official, who tells the person they’ve called that a loved one is in the hospital with coronavirus. The call recipient needs to give credit card information over the phone, now, to prepay the hospital bills.

“Everyone’s so isolated. No one really knows where anybody is,” Nessel said, noting she’s had several friends die from the virus in Michigan, where the number of deaths is already around 1,600, according to a John Hopkins University tally. “It’s so easy to prey upon people when they are literally scared for their lives.”  —more
