(CNN Business)  Amy Offield always dreamed of running a vacation rental in Galveston, Texas. Five years ago, she and her husband Chris got their wish and bought a house there minutes away from the beach. They immediately began restoring the property, which she named the “Blue Skies Beach Bungalow,” adding vintage items as well as retro and bright-colored decor.

But as coronavirus spread across the United States in March, Offield, who has been a full-time Airbnb host for nearly two years, started seeing a wave of cancellations. When Galveston temporarily shut down short-term rentals as part of its stay-at-home order, Offield switched her Airbnb to a 30-day stay, the minimum required to be considered a long-term listing. She didn’t get a single reservation, and her beach bungalow has stood empty for two months.  —more—

(CNN)  America’s young people need to get back to school in person. There is no substitute for them interacting with each other. It’s how human beings are wired.

Given what we think we know about the coronavirus, that the rate of infection has slowed but that — as Dr. Anthony Fauci has said — another wave of infection is likely later in the year, the goal should be to reopen in late summer — an approach that colleges like Notre Dame and several others have said recently they are adopting: open school a couple of weeks earlier than usual, cancel fall break to reduce student travel and shorten the term to finish before Thanksgiving.  —more—

Wear a mask. Wash your hands with soap. Stay at least 6 feet from others. If you do gather with others, go outside rather than inside.

Still, there’s one more aspect to infection that has received less attention. Growing evidence suggests that Covid-19 infection, like with other illnesses, is related to prolonged time exposed to the virus. He suspects that he may have gotten the virus through his eyes on a plane flight. “It felt like a moderately severe flu for the first week,” he says, but then his condition got progressively worse and he had trouble breathing. He declined to be intubated and responded well to oxygen and drug treatment, and has been taken off the critical list. “I am a very healthy person,” he says. “If it can take me down, it can take anybody down.”  —more—

CNN health | Black light experiment shows how quickly a virus like Covid-19 can spread at a restaurant

(CNN)  A viral video from Japan aims to show how easily germs and viruses can spread in restaurants when just one person is infected.

The experiment simulates the atmosphere at a buffet restaurant or on a cruise ship. It was conducted by the public broadcasting organization NHK in conjunction with health experts.

The video shows 10 people coming into the restaurant, with one singled out as the “infected” person. Each participant goes about the buffet as they normally would, not considering a potential contamination. —more—

CNN | How coronavirus spread from one member to 87% of the singers at a Washington choir practice

(CNN)  Public health officials studying the Covid-19 outbreak among members of a Washington choir found numerous ways the virus could have spread, according to a report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Authorities interviewed all 122 members of the Skagit Valley Chorale, which met every Tuesday for 2.5 hours before the outbreak. They focused on two rehearsals held March 3 and March 10 in Mount Vernon, Washington.

The report said 53 people were sickened and two died — and all but one attended both rehearsals. The report said Thirty-three cases were confirmed, the report said, and 20 people had probable infections.  —more—
