CNN style Arts | Rare Winston Churchill painting sold by Angelina Jolie smashes auction record

A rare Winston Churchill painting that was gifted to US President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II and eventually made its way into actor Angelina Jolie’s collection has become the most expensive painting by the former British prime minister to sell at auction, fetching nearly £8.3 million ($11.5 million) after fees.

The work, “Tower of Koutoubia Mosque,” was sold March 1 by the Jolie Family Collection and features the long shadows and warm tones of a sunset in Marrakech, Morroco — a favorite subject of Churchill’s to paint.  –read more—

CNN | The US marks ‘Bloody Sunday’ amid a quest to identify the 600 souls who risked it all

Albert Turner and Bob Mants walk directly behind fellow civil rights stalwarts Hosea Williams and John Lewis, but most of the marchers who took part that day remain unidentified.

(CNN) – Debra Barnes Wilson was 8 on “Bloody Sunday” in Selma, Alabama. She and her grandmother, Julia Barnes, joined the voting rights marchers, filing in at the back of the column, but turned back because the elder, an asthmatic, grew short of breath.

The girl’s grandmother, who raised her, lived in George Washington Carver Homes, across the street from the Brown Chapel AME Church, where marchers congregated before heading across the Edmund Pettus Bridge into what late civil rights icon John Lewis called a “sea of blue” — a phalanx of state troopers standing ready to brutalize the peaceful demonstrators.  –read more—

CNN Bleacher Report | Kobe Bryant Rookie Card BGS Pristine Black Label 10 Sells for $1.79M at Auction

A Kobe Bryant 1996-97 Topps Chrome Refractors rookie card sold for $1.79 million at an online auction late Saturday, per Darren Rovell of Action Network.

Goldin Auctions was the home for this auction. The bidding started at $250,000 and ended with the item selling as the 10th-most expensive sports trading card in history, per Rovell.  —read more— 

CNN | Tom Brady rookie card sells for record $1.32 million

(CNN) – The most expensive trading card in football history, a Tom Brady rookie card, has sold for $1.32 million.

FitBit CEO and co-founder James Park made the purchase.

“I lived in Boston for 10 years and so am a huge fan of Brady,” Park said in a statement on the Instagram page of PWCC Marketplace, the online auction house which brokered the deal.  –read more—

CNN BUSINESS | Ford’s Mustang Mach-E is eating into Tesla’s US sales

New York (CNN Business) – Tesla is starting to lose market share among US buyers of electric vehicles, and Ford’s Mustang Mach-E appears to be the beneficiary.

Analysis by Morgan Stanley shows that Tesla’s share of the US EV market fell to 69% in February, down from 81% a year ago.

Tesla’s US sales are still climbing, according to this analysis, due to the increased appetite among US car buyers for electric vehicles. Morgan Stanley estimates that industrywide US EV sales rose 34% in February, compared to a year earlier, even as sales of traditional internal combustion engine vehicles fell by 5.4%, according to the analysis.  —read more—

CNN travel | World’s first space hotel scheduled to open in 2027

(CNN) — If you’re daydreaming of future travels while stuck at home during the pandemic, why fantasize about the beaches of Bali or the canals of Venice when vacationing in space could be in your future?

Back in 2019, Californian company the Gateway Foundation released plans for a cruise ship-style hotel that could one day float above the Earth’s atmosphere.

Then called the Von Braun Station, this futuristic concept — comprised of 24 modules connected by elevator shafts that make up a rotating wheel orbiting the Earth — was scheduled to be fully operational by 2027.  –read more—
