The world’s fastest supercomputer identified chemicals that could stop coronavirus from spreading, a crucial step toward a treatment

Summit, the world’s most powerful supercomputer, modeled how different drug compounds might prevent the coronavirus from spreading to other cells.

CNN | The novel coronavirus presents an unprecedented challenge for scientists: The speed at which the virus spreads means they must accelerate their research.

But this is what the world’s fastest supercomputer was built for.
Summit, IBM’s supercomputer equipped with the “brain of AI,” ran thousands of simulations to analyze which drug compounds might effectively stop the virus from infecting host cells.
The supercomputer identified 77 of them. It’s a promising step toward creating the most effective treatment. —more

CNN travel | Today’s hotel is tomorrow’s coronavirus hospital

(CNN) The Ayre Gran Hotel Colón is a four-star, 365-room design hotel in downtown Madrid close to Retiro Park and one of the city’s largest hospitals.

Earlier this year, its guests enjoyed newly renovated rooms, stained-glass windows, serene gardens and even an onsite art gallery. For the past week, however, the hotel’s two towers have been transformed into a medical facility to treat patients with mild cases of coronavirus.
With global travel at a standstill — and millions of people projected to contract Covid-19 in the coming months — governments around the world are looking to otherwise closed hotels as a way to alleviate stresses on overburdened health systems.  —more

The Fed’s Interest-Rate Cut Highlights Worries About Credit Troubles | Barron’s

Barron’s | The Fed’s Interest-Rate Cut Highlights Worries About Credit Troubles

The Federal Reserve’s emergency cut to interest rates didn’t provide much of a salve for markets rattled by the coronavirus. Instead, it raised red flags about a possible credit crisis for small and midsize businesses.

The half-percentage-point rate cut, the first move between scheduled policy meetings since the global financial crisis, sent yields on the 10-year Treasury note below 1%. The S&P 500 had reversed early gains to fall 3% by late afternoon. Some economists see the move, aimed at cushioning business confidence, as a high-risk bet.  —more

Raising Capital Gets Tougher for Real-Estate Funds

Raising Capital Gets Tougher for Real-Estate Funds

As property values hit a plateau, big investors are becoming more selective about where they put their money

By Peter Grant

The amount of capital raised by real-estate private-equity funds plummeted in the fourth quarter of 2019 in a sign that investors are struggling to find high-yielding deals after years of soaring prices.

Only $18 billion of real-estate funds closed during the quarter, the smallest amount for a three-month period since the first quarter of 2013, according to data firm Preqin. By comparison, the total was $47 billion in the third quarter of 2019 and $35 billion in the fourth quarter of 2018, Preqin said.

Analysts caution against putting too much weight on one quarter’s results. Fund closings often take place in bursts, they note.  —more

Defaults Are Rising in Sluggish New York City Hotel Market

Defaults Are Rising in Sluggish New York City Hotel Market

More New York City hotel owners are defaulting on their mortgages, succumbing to a crush of new supply and rising expenses.

The surge in new development has pressured room rates, while short-term rental-listing websites such as Airbnb Inc. have also gained market share.

New York’s average daily room rate fell to $255.16 last year, according to research firm STR. That is down from $271.15 in 2014 and the lowest figure since at least 2013. A continued construction boom could push these numbers down further: 22,117 new hotel rooms were under construction or in planning as of January, according to STR.   —more

Wall Street Journal | Crowdfunding Firms Blow Up the Model to Survive in Real Estate

Dan Miller became a pioneer of real-estate crowdfunding about eight years ago by selling stakes in mainstream property such as hotels, apartment buildings and offices to small-time investors via the internet.

Today, he is focused on property with an environmental bent, backing urban farms in Detroit and a grain and dairy farm in Pennsylvania’s Amish country.

His new approach reflects a broader midcourse correction for real estate and crowdfunding, the practice of financing a project by raising small amounts of money from a large number of people.  —more
