PALMER: The Hamilton-Verstappen clash polarised opinion, but I believe it was a racing incident – here’s why | F1 OPINION

F1 OPINION | PALMER: The Hamilton-Verstappen clash polarised opinion, but I believe it was a racing incident – here’s why

It was a heavy impact for Verstappen

Their rivalry had been fierce but just about respectful on track until Silverstone, but finally it boiled over in a fairly predictable manner, fueled by a festival atmosphere from a vocal British crowd and a new weekend format.

Before Silverstone we had seen the two go wheel-to-wheel at Imola, Portimao and Barcelona. Both have been very aggressive, but generally Verstappen had been the more aggressive of the two, particularly in Barcelona, lunging in on Hamilton in a risky first-corner move.

At Imola and Barcelona Verstappen came out on top, and again in Portimao, before Hamilton re-passed him and ushered him wide at Turn 3.  —read more

Jamie Dimon awarded hundreds of millions of dollars to stay at JPMorgan for the foreseeable future | CNN BUSINESS

CNN BUSINESS | Jamie Dimon awarded hundreds of millions of dollars to stay at JPMorgan for the foreseeable future

New York (CNN Business) – JPMorgan Chase really, really wants CEO Jamie Dimon to stick around.

The investment bank awarded Dimon 1.5 million stock options on July 20 — priced at the average price of JPMorgan’s stock on Tuesday, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Today, that’s an award worth more than $220 million.

But here’s the catch: Dimon won’t be able to exercise the options. They’ll start to vest on July 20, 2026, and he must hold the shares until July 20, 2031. By then, the shares could be worth much more — especially if it has a few more years like this one. JPMorgan’s stock is up nearly 18% in 2021. —read more

Most romantic relationships start as friendships, study finds | CNN health

CNN health | Most romantic relationships start as friendships, study finds

CNN) – Contrary to the popular perception that love typically sparks from passion, a new study finds two-thirds of romantic relationships begin as long-term friendships.

Though highly prevalent, the friends-to-lovers pathway to a relationship has been largely overlooked by science, said Danu Stinson, lead author of the study and an associate professor of psychology at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada.

Stinson has studied relationship initiation for 20 years, and she noticed over the years that many participants reported they were forming romantic bonds with friends they had known for a while. She began asking the question, “Were you friends with your partner before you became romantically involved?” in her other research and conducted a meta-analysis for this paper.

“Very few studies are really looking at this friends-first relationship initiation, despite our observation that it’s the most common form of relationship initiation by far,” Stinson said.  —read more

CNN Sports | Lewis Hamilton targeted with racist abuse online after controversial British Grand Prix victory

Lewis Hamilton celebrates on the podium at Silverstone.

(CNN) – Lewis Hamilton was the target of online racist abuse after winning his eighth British Grand Prix on Sunday.

The seven-time world champion fought back from a 10-second penalty to clinch victory following a controversial collision with rival Max Verstappen, which left the Red Bull driver in hospital.

Facebook, which also owns Instagram, said it had removed a number of comments from its platform in relation to Hamilton, who has been a huge advocate for diversity and the Black Lives Matter movement, and called the abuse “unacceptable.”  —read more

Hamilton overcomes first-lap collision with Verstappen to hunt down Leclerc for 8th British GP win | F1

F1 | Hamilton overcomes first-lap collision with Verstappen to hunt down Leclerc for 8th British GP win

Lewis Hamilton overcame first lap contact with title rival Max Verstappen and a 10-second penalty to take an eighth British Grand Prix win at Silverstone, passing Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc – who led the majority of the race – with just three laps of the race to go, as the second Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas took P3.

Hamilton and Verstappen had sparred spectacularly throughout the first half lap of the Grand Prix, but made contact at Copse when Hamilton tried to pass up the inside into the fast sweeping corner, with Verstappen spinning hard into the barriers and out of the race – with Hamilton handed a 10-second penalty for the collision.

But a committed recovery from Hamilton saw him close down the gap to Leclerc in the final stages of the race, Hamilton passing the Monegasque driver on Lap 50 of 52 to take an emotional victory in front of an ecstatic British Grand Prix crowd – with the reigning champion closing the gap to Verstappen in the title race to just eight points.  —read more

CNN BUSINESS | VW hopes its electric bus can drive huge sales growth in the US

(CNN) – Germany’s Volkswagen Group hopes to more than double its market share in the United States by 2030, and it’s counting on a cute electric remake of its classic VW Microbus to help it get there.

The VW ID Buzz is expected to go on sale in 2023 in the US. The production version hasn’t been unveiled yet, but the ID Buzz concept, unveiled in 2017, was clearly modeled on the beloved VW bus of the 1960s and ’70s.

“It will significantly contribute to enhancing the appeal of the Volkswagen brand, reloading it with emotions and love, particularly in the US,” VW chairman Herbert Diess said in a presentation.  —read more

Verstappen beats Hamilton in thrilling F1 Sprint at Silverstone to claim pole position for British GP | F1

F1 | Verstappen beats Hamilton in thrilling F1 Sprint at Silverstone to claim pole position for British GP

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has won the inaugural F1 Sprint at the iconic Silverstone circuit, earning himself three points and pole position for Sunday’s British Grand Prix, as he triumphed over the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

With all of the top 10 starting the 17-lap F1 Sprint on medium tyres bar the Mercedes of Bottas on used softs, Verstappen was incisive off the start from second on the grid, out-dragging the Mercedes of Hamilton – who’d started P1 – into Abbey, despite flames having been spotted licking from his front-left wheel on the grid.

Fans were then treated to a thrilling opening lap, with Verstappen resisting the passing attempts of Hamilton – including an audacious one to go around the outside of the Red Bull at Copse – while Fernando Alonso impressively used the soft starting tyres on his Alpine to jump from 11th to 5th, as the two Haas cars of Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin touched in the Village complex, with Mazepin spinning.  —read more

Old cars with more than 100,000 miles are worth real money now | CNN BUSINESS

CNN BUSINESS | Old cars with more than 100,000 miles are worth real money now

New York (CNN Business) – A lot of people still think that, once a car has been driven more than 100,000 miles, there’s not much value left in it.

That hasn’t really been true for decades, but it’s especially wrong now. Used car prices have been driven to extremes recently thanks to a combination of demand from consumers wary of taking public transportation and a major shortage in the computer chips needed to make new cars. That superheated market is pushing prices higher, even for cars and trucks with six-digit mileage.

Historically, even when used car prices have risen overall, the prices on cars past the 100,000- mile mark haven’t budged as much. But that’s definitely not the case this year.  —read more
