CNN BUSINESS | America’s economic recovery hits a major roadblock

New York (CNN Business) – This summer, the American economic recovery hit a roadblock.

The US economy grew at an annualized rate of only 2% in the third quarter, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported Thursday.

The highly infectious Delta variant of the coronavirus, supply chain chaos, worker shortages, sluggish jobs numbers and higher prices weighed on economic activity.

It was far lower than the 2.7% economists had predicted and the slowest pace of growth since the start of the recovery, as well as a massive step down from the 6.7% rate in the spring.  —read more—

CNN World Space + Science | NASA discovers first possible planet outside our galaxy

(CNN) – Scientists may have detected signs of a planet transiting a star outside of the Milky Way, in what could be the first planet ever to be discovered outside our galaxy.

The possible exoplanet was discovered in the Whirlpool Galaxy — the spiral galaxy Messier 51 (M51) — by NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, NASA said in a press release on Monday.

An exoplanet is a planet outside of our solar system that normally orbits a star other than our own sun in our galaxy. Until now, all other exoplanets have been found in the Milky Way, and most of them have been found less than 3,000 light-years from Earth.  —read more —

Verstappen brilliantly holds off Hamilton to seal victory at COTA and extend championship lead | F1

F1 | Verstappen brilliantly holds off Hamilton to seal victory at COTA and extend championship lead

Max Verstappen won a spectacular duel with title rival Lewis Hamilton in the 2021 United States Grand Prix, with Red Bull gaining ground on Mercedes thanks to Perez’s podium finish – and the championship leader extending his lead to 12 points.

From second on the grid Hamilton enjoyed a stellar start off the line as the lights went out in Austin, and despite Verstappen squeezing him as far as possible down the inside to the run-up to Turn 1, the Briton gained P1 from the Dutchman to lead going into the esses. Perez, starting third, followed and began to lose hundredths, then tenths, to the leaders.

Red Bull championship hopeful Verstappen opened the pit window on Lap 11, pitting from medium tyres to hards, while Mercedes’ reigning champion Hamilton followed in on Lap 14 only to emerge second behind the under-cutting Red Bull driver. But there was another pit stop to come under the scorching Texas sun.  —read more—

QUALIFYING: Verstappen pips Hamilton to pole position with sensational final lap in Austin | F1

F1 | QUALIFYING: Verstappen pips Hamilton to pole position with sensational final lap in Austin

Max Verstappen responded to a bold lap from title rival Lewis Hamilton to take pole position at Austin’s Circuit of The Americas in front of an ecstatic 120,000 sell-out crowd…

Verstappen looked quick in final practice – his Red Bull team appearing to have made big gains overnight – and carried that through to qualifying, where he absorbed pressure from Hamilton to take pole with a 1m32.910s.

Mercedes came to Austin having taken every pole during the hybrid turbo era, which began in 2014, but they looked to have lost their edge early in qualifying, with Hamilton 0.399s off the pace in Q2.  —read more

George Washington warned US about what the GOP is doing | CNN politics

CNN politics | Bannon case and stalled voting rights bill show how GOP has given up on democracy

(CNN) – George Washington’s nightmare is coming true.

Two disparate events this week — Steve Bannon’s willingness to risk criminal contempt of Congress to protect a twice-impeached former President and the GOP’s latest move in the Senate blocking efforts to guarantee the rights of all citizens to vote — are validating the first President’s fear that American democracy would founder on the rocks of partisan extremism.

While the American people are weary of the endless partisan fights bequeathed by Donald Trump’s presidency, they are caught in a seminal moment that will decide how America is governed now and for generations to come.  —read more—

CNN | A Black girl was arrested at school in Hawaii over a drawing that upset a parent

(CNN) – The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii is demanding policy changes after a 10-year-old Black girl was arrested at school over a drawing linked to a “run of the mill” dispute among children.

In response to the incident, the ACLU sent a letter Monday to the Honolulu Police Department, the state Department of Education and the state attorney general’s office asking them to adopt policy changes, expunge all records of the arrest, and to pay $500,000 in damages for “harm and suffering” caused by their agencies.

In January 2020, a parent called the Honowai Elementary School in Honolulu to complain about the drawing made by the girl and demanded the staff call police, the ACLU said.  —read more—

CNN style Architecture | The year’s most stunning architectural photos revealed

Images of a cube-shaped office building in Berlin and a soaring Chinese skyscraper complex are among the finalists in the prestigious Architectural Photography Awards.

Spanning categories including interiors, exteriors and buildings in use, the 2021 shortlist also features pictures of a curvilinear hotel in Dubai and a Hong Kong tower in complete darkness after residents were evacuated during lockdown.

The winners will be announced at the annual World Architecture Festival (WAF), which is being hosted virtually in early December. Two photos will be selected from each of the six categories — one by festival delegates and the other by a jury of architects and industry figures. Of these 12 images, two will be named overall winners.  —read more—

What tyres will the drivers and teams have for the 2021 United States Grand Prix? | F1

F1 | What tyres will the drivers and teams have for the 2021 United States Grand Prix?

The United States Grand Prix returns this weekend after a year away, and Pirelli have announced their tyre allocation for the Circuit of The Americas race.

Just six points separate the championship leaders Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen heading to the United States, with F1 returning to Austin after last year’s race was called off due to the global pandemic. Now it’s back with a partially new surface – around 40% of COTA having been laid with new asphalt – and potential for high drama.

Pirelli have confirmed the same nomination as it was in the 2019 US Grand Prix, with C2 (hard, x2 sets), C3 (medium, x3 sets) and C4 (soft, x8 sets) tyres in use this weekend for each driver.  —read more—
