CNN Style/Fashion | This ‘Sex and the City’ dress achieved cult status. But it has controversial origins

(CNN)Remember when Carrie Bradshaw of “Sex and the City” wore a Christian Dior newspaper-print dress? Bradshaw, the fashion-forward sex columnist, played by Sarah Jessica Parker in the television series, defined late 1990s and early 2000s lifestyle aspirations for Gen X women when she and her three friends dominated the small screen from 1998 to 2004. (The television series and sequel aired on HBO and Max, respectively, which share the same parent company as CNN: Warner Bros. Discovery.)

Cut on the bias and featuring a newspaper print, the now iconic outfit designed by John Galliano became a piece of fashion legend, courtesy of a scene from season three, episode 17, which saw Bradshaw wearing it while walking in slow motion through the traffic-lined streets of Manhattan. In those brief on-screen moments, the dress — which was from Dior’s ready-to-wear autumn-winter 2000 “Fly Girl” collection — assured cult status.  read more

CNN Style/Fashion | She spent $2,600 on a designer bag from a trusted store. Was it a fake?

(CNN) — Many people will have experienced the excitement of receiving an online order, or that hit of dopamine that follows a new purchase. But what happens when you unbox the goods, only to find that it wasn’t what you were expecting? Worse yet, when it turns out that you spent a significant sum on a product that could potentially be counterfeit?

That was the dilemma Joan Kim had to contend with. In a TikTok video uploaded in December 2024 that has since amassed over 1 million views, the Los Angeles-based content creator shared her frustration at “being scammed” by US luxury department store-chain Saks Fifth Avenue. “It’s the holidays and I wanted to buy a gift,” Kim said, gesturing to an ivory-colored leather bag on her shoulder. Priced at $2,600, it was a tote by The Row, the discreet, logo-free luxury label founded by actresses-turned-designers Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.  read more

CNN) — The Cannes red carpet is officially in full swing, with stars flocking to the French Riviera for the annual Film Festival. Now in its 78th year, the event is a jewel in the calendar of both lofty cinephiles and polished fashionistas. Since last week, actors, directors, producers and influencers have been ascending the carpeted steps — not just to promote their latest feature film at the high temple of world cinema, but also to turn a look.

This year, the fashion stakes were upped before the festival even opened its doors — prompted by a change in the official dress code, announced just hours before kick-off. Nudity was explicitly banned (also prohibiting the current celebrity favorite ‘naked’ dress trend that has dominated the red carpet in recent years); as were “voluminous outfits” with large trains for the sake of traffic control. read more
