Why you need to wear the damn mask | CNN Opinion

CNN Opinion | Why you need to wear the damn mask

(CNN) Go for a walk, visit any open establishment or public space, and you will note a disconcerting phenomenon: People without masks.

There is a pandemic. Tens of thousands of Americans are dead because of Covid-19, a disease that spreads in droplets that are expelled by infected humans, including as they talk or cough, and whether they show symptoms or not.  —more

The US should be a leader in the global fight against Covid-19 | CNN Opinion

CNN Opinion | The US should be a leader in the global fight against Covid-19

(CNN) Americans are staring down an unprecedented crisis. We’ve already lost more than 71,000 of our fellow citizens. Millions of families live in fear and uncertainty every second. And large swaths of our workforce are losing their jobs each week.

Together, we face a common, invisible enemy: the novel coronavirus, Covid-19.

As two former US Senate majority leaders, we didn’t always see eye to eye during our time together in Congress, but today, we certainly agree on at least two things: America must lead the rest of the world to defeat Covid-19. And if we take our eye off the ball, China will try to exploit this crisis to its own gain. —more

If you’re hitting a wall, you’re not alone | CNN Opinion

CNN Opinion | If you’re hitting a wall, you’re not alone

(CNN) – Are you losing your mind in quarantine? Because I am losing my mind in quarantine.

It can feel trite, even crude, to talk about our own discomforts, frustrations and longings in the midst of a pandemic that has infected more than three million people worldwide and killed more than 200,000 including nearly 60,000 in the United States, with numbers climbing. Across the globe, families are grieving friends, family and community members. Husbands, wives, children, parents and partners are saying goodbye via iPad, unable to hold a loved one’s hand in their final moments. It’s a grim, ghastly time.  —more

How to clean your bathroom to protect against coronavirus | CNN health

CNN health | How to clean your bathroom to protect against coronavirus

(CNN) – With nearly all kids out of school in the United States and in many other places around the world, and large numbers of workers telecommuting, many houses are more crowded than usual.

And bathrooms are perhaps the one crucial point in the house where all humans — and therefore microbes — pass through. So during the present pandemic, keeping your toilets, sinks, counters and showers as germ-free as possible is key to keeping you and your family healthy.  —more

They won the fight against coronavirus. Here’s what life looks like on the other side | CNN

CNN | They won the fight against coronavirus. Here’s what life looks like on the other side

(CNN) – Cookie Villarreal was finally home. She had beaten the novel coronavirus but she couldn’t get dressed by herself or even raise her arms to brush her hair.

“By the grace of God I was able to get off (the ventilator),” said the 69-year-old woman from Lorain, Ohio.

Villarreal is among thousands of people who have survived after contracting Covid-19. As of Thursday, estimates indicate that more than 710,000 people have recovered from Covid-19 worldwide, according to data collected by John Hopkins University. The actual figure is likely to be higher because the data cover only confirmed cases.  —more

Hubble Space Telescope celebrates 30 years of discoveries and awe-inspiring images | CNN

CNN | Hubble Space Telescope celebrates 30 years of discoveries and awe-inspiring images

(CNN) – The Hubble Space Telescope launched 30 years ago on Friday, forever changing the way we see the universe. The telescope’s ethereal, dreamy and almost fantasy-like views of space vistas have inspired people for decades and led to some of the most important astronomical discoveries.

The space observatory and its instruments, an international cooperative effort between NASA and the European Space Agency, captures unprecedented views of stars, galaxies and the distant universe in visible, ultraviolet and near-infrared light. These different wavelengths of light have allowed Hubble to peer into different regions of space that had never been observed before. –more–

Bill Gates explains how the United States can safely ease coronavirus restrictions | CNN Business

CNN Business | Bill Gates explains how the United States can safely ease coronavirus restrictions

New York (CNN Business)The ability for parts of the United States to safely and effectively begin to lift coronavirus restrictions will depend on the country’s capacity to aggressively test for and trace new cases of the virus, Bill Gates told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria Sunday.

His comments come as several US states prepare to ease social distancing and stay-at-home restrictions this week, despite warnings from health researchers that no state should reopen before May 1. Meanwhile, the total number of reported coronavirus cases in the United States is nearing 1 million, and more than 54,000 Americans have died.  —more

Asthma and coronavirus: Act now to decrease your chance of a serious outcome | CNN health

CNN health | Asthma and coronavirus: Act now to decrease your chance of a serious outcome

(CNN)  Dr. Matt Dougherty isn’t waiting for his pediatric asthma patients or their parents to call him in a panic, frightened that a sudden cough or wheeze is due to the novel coronavirus. He’s reaching out to them, virtually, via telemedicine.

“I look through my patient files, identify the ones in the past that I know have had problems this time of year with allergies triggering their asthma and contact them before they have symptoms,” said Dougherty, who treats children with allergies and asthma at Esse Health in St. Louis, Missouri.  —more

What happened when I bought a hotel by mistake | CNN travel

CNN travel | What happened when I bought a hotel by mistake

(CNN) — Anyone currently whiling away the long hours of lockdown with when-this-is-all-over dreams of a fresh start in life, should heed this as a cautionary tale.

In 2011, at the age of 44, I had my own mid-life-crisis career swerve, ditching journalism to start a new life as the owner of a waterfront hotel, restaurant and bar on the Scottish island of Islay.

Four months later, having already developed a slightly queasy sense that I might have made a mistake, confirmation that I wasn’t cut out for the hospitality trade duly arrived over breakfast in the hotel dining room, one November Sunday morning.  —more
