Mercedes-AMG, just keepin’ it 100!

Mercedes-AMG is 7 for 7 for the 2019 Formula 1 season with Lewis Hamilton winning the Canadian Grand Prix for the 7th time and it’s the 5th win of the season for Hamilton.

5 for 7 for Hamilton in Montreal

From starting in 2nd position Mercedes-AMG’s Lewis Hamilton wins his 5th race out of 7 this season and wins the Canadian Grand Prix for the 7th time.  Ferrari’s drivers finished off the podium with Sebastian Vettel coming in 2nd and Charles Leclerc finishing 3rd.

Mercedes-AMG has won all 7 races, so far, this year

It’s Mercedes, Ferrari, Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton wins his 2nd Monaco Grand Prix with a super exciting finish and normal Formula 1 tire drama.  Mercedes-AMG made a decision, with the one-stop (pit stop) strategy to Hamilton back out on the medium Pirelli compound while other teams went for a harder compound.  Late in the race that strategy was starting to look like it would come back to haunt Mercedes with Max Verstappen for Red Bull running in 2nd and Hamilton’s front tires were so worn that he virtually had no grip left.  Hamilton did an excellent job taking advantage of Monaco’s iconic narrow track that makes it very, very hard to overtake another car and positioning his car perfectly on the racing line to keep Verstappen from overtaking.  Ironically, Verstappen had been hit with a 5 second penalty earlier in the racing so finishing before Mercedes would have been mostly symbolic for Red Bull.  Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel finished in 2nd, breaking Mercedes’ streak of finishing one, two for most of this season, but Mercedes still had both of their drivers on the podium with Valtteri Bottas coming in 3rd.

Practice sessions in Barcelona today were all over the place.  Typically, this European session on the annual calendar is where the teams try out different set-ups and updates to their cars.  Ferrari tried updates packages for their cars that resulted in some very good lap times for Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc, but the question for this weekend remains as to whether Ferrari can take the fight to Mercedes-AMG or will it like the first 4 races where the Ferraris performed well in the Practice and Qualifying sessions but couldn’t get that performance to carry over to race day on Sunday allowing Mercedes-AMG to earn 4 all team podiums in a row.  Midway through P2 on Friday, Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton for Mercedes were fasted.
