Goldman Sachs: A Democratic sweep would mean faster economic recovery | CNN BUSINESS

CNN BUSINESS | Goldman Sachs: A Democratic sweep would mean faster economic recovery

New York (CNN Business) – President Donald Trump is once again warning voters that Democrats would “shut our economy and jobs down” if they win in November.

Goldman Sachs is telling its clients the exact opposite.

Just hours after Trump’s all-caps Monday morning tweet predicting economic disaster, Goldman economists pointed out that polls “suggest a ‘blue wave’ in which Democrats gain unified control of Washington is becoming more likely” — and they’re not suggesting investors dump stocks.

In fact, “all else equal, such a blue wave would likely prompt us to upgrade our forecasts,” Goldman Sachs chief economist Jan Hatzius wrote in a Monday report.  —more—

Official autopsy shows Black man killed by Los Angeles deputies was shot 16 times | CNN

CNN | Official autopsy shows Black man killed by Los Angeles deputies was shot 16 times

(CNN) – The official autopsy of Dijon Kizzee, a 29-year-old Black man killed by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies in August, has been released following a month-long security hold at the direction of the sheriff’s department.

The Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s autopsy report found that Kizzee was shot 16 times, with at least four of those bullets causing “rapidly life-threatening wounds.” Some of the wounds were to the head, torso and back, the report said.
Kizzee’s shooting sparked protests last month in South Los Angeles, a city that has already seen months-long unrest following the death of George Floyd while in Minneapolis police custody. “It’s happening so fast we can barely keep up with the hashtags,” Benjamin Crump, an attorney representing the Kizzee family, previously said of police shootings of Black people, evoking Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and Jacob Blake.  —more—

CNN health | This is what happens to your body over months in isolation

(CNN) – Since the pandemic officially began in March, we’ve been told staying home is the best way to avoid catching Covid-19. And it is. But life in confinement can cause physical ailments on its own.

Being homebound for so long contorts the body, weakens the heart and lungs and even impairs brain function. The effects of life in isolation may stay with us beyond the pandemic’s end (whenever that may be).

This is what half a year of isolation, staying home and staying sedentary can do to your body.  —more—

F1 | Bottas eases to Sochi win over Verstappen as penalty leaves Hamilton P3

Valtteri Bottas wins for Mercedes-AMG

Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas scored his second win of 2020 at the Russian Grand Prix, benefitting from a penalty for his polesitting team mate Lewis Hamilton that left the six-time champion third at the flag, as Max Verstappen claimed Red Bull’s first ever podium at Sochi in P2.

Hamilton began the race on the back foot, after a pair of practice start infringements on his laps to the grid led to him being handed a 10s penalty mid-race, ruling him out of contention for the win, as he came home in P3.  —more—

It’s a myth that women don’t want sex as they age, study finds | CNN health

CNN health | It’s a myth that women don’t want sex as they age, study finds

(CNN) – It’s a myth that women lose interest in sex as they enter midlife and beyond, according to new research that followed over 3,200 women for approximately 15 years.

“About a quarter of women rate sex as very important, regardless of their age,” said Dr. Holly Thomas, lead author of an abstract being presented during the 2020 virtual annual meeting of The North American Menopause Society, which opens on Monday, September 28.

“The study showed substantial numbers of women still highly value sex, even as they get older, and it’s not abnormal,” said Thomas, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.  —more—

(CNN) – This season, Lewis Hamilton’s fight has been as much off the track as on it.

The 35-year-old has been using his platform as the world’s best Formula One driver and one of the most famous athletes on the planet to fight for racial equality and justice, in particular through his support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Earlier this month, Hamilton stood atop the podium after victory at the Tuscan Grand Prix with the words “ARREST THE COPS WHO KILLED BREONNA TAYLOR” emblazoned on his shirt.  —more—

A healthy sex life boosts long-term survival hopes for heart attack victims | CNN health

CNN health | A healthy sex life boosts long-term survival hopes for heart attack victims

(CNN) – People who have had heart attacks can boost their chances of long-term survival by returning to normal levels of sexual activity, a new study shows.

Many people stop having sex after a heart attack in the belief that it could trigger another episode, but research published Wednesday in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology says sex is good for survival rates.

Researchers followed 495 couples for around 20 years and found that those who maintained or increased their frequency of sexual activity in the first six months after a heart attack had a 35% lower risk of death than those who stopped having sex or reduced their frequency.  —more—

CNN BUSINESS | These states are voting on cannabis legalization this November

San Francisco (CNN Business) – In 2016, the US election resulted in a green wave as cannabis legalization measures passed in eight out of nine states.

Now, the industry and its supporters are hoping for another big win in November.

This year, voters in five states will decide whether to adopt either new medical or recreational cannabis laws — or, perhaps, both in the case of one state.

As it stands now, 33 states have legalized medical cannabis, and of those, 11 states have legalized cannabis for adult recreational use.  —more—

CNN | Architect’s innovative shipping container homes could help solve Puerto Rico’s housing crisis

KONTi’s vision is to turn shipping containers into safe and affordable homes.

(CNN) – Puerto Rican architect Carla Gautier Castro stands overlooking the remains of a home after a string of earthquakes hammered the town of Yauco, on the southwest of the island.

It’s a painful scene she has seen again and again. It is also the reason she now dedicates her life to ensuring everyone on the island has a safe dwelling.

The pillars of this concrete house collapsed, crushing three vehicles underneath. Furniture and personal belongings are strewn around, unreachable, unsalvageable.

“I’m traumatized,” homeowner Luz María Morales Vargas tells Gautier Castro. “We’ve lived here for 27 years.”  —more—
