CNN style Arts | Sony World Photography Award unveils the year’s best photographers

The annual Sony World Photography Awards has announced the winners of its 2021 competition, with two of the top prizes going to photographers who reexamined biases in how culture and history is portrayed.

Zimbabwean photographer Tamary Kudita was named Open Photographer of the Year, a category honoring single images, and awarded $5,000 for her winning portrait, “African Victorian.” British documentarian Craig Easton was named Photographer of the Year and awarded $25,000 for the series “Bank Top,” which comprises black-and-white images and text, capturing a humanistic portrait of a small community in Blackburn, northern England.   —read more— 

CNN BUSINESS | FCC approves $50 monthly internet subsidies for low-income households during pandemic

(CNN) – The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday approved final rules for a new broadband subsidy program that could help struggling families pay for internet service during the pandemic.

The agency’s $3.2 billion Emergency Broadband Benefit Program provides eligible low-income households with up to a $50 per month credit on their internet bills through their provider until the end of the pandemic. In tribal areas, eligible households may receive up to $75 per month. The program also provides eligible households up to $100 off of one computer or tablet.  —read more—

(CNN) – “Want to hear the joke about insulin?” goes the bleak gag about America’s drug prices. “You have to go to Canada to get it.”

But even that’s not an option anymore.

Pandemic travel restrictions have made Americans prisoners of their country. Even within North America, Mexico and Canada have closed thousands of miles of border to all but essential travel, roiling plans for vacation, work, and school. After their troubles in Silverstone, Mercedes got back up to speed by finishing one-two in both practice sessions in Spain on Friday – though Lewis Hamilton remained distinctly cautious afterwards, suggesting Red Bull would be a major threat to the Silver Arrows once more.

CNN Business | People are bidding online for million-dollar cars — without seeing them in person

(CNN) – Increasingly, wealthy bidders are going online to buy collector cars worth six-figures or more at auctions without seeing them in person first.

At one online auction last month, a 2003 Ferrari Enzo sold for $2.6 million. It was the highest price ever paid for a car in an Internet-only auction, according to RM Sotheby’s. At that same auction, another Ferrari, a 1985 288 GTO, sold for $2.3 million. And, at another another recent RM Sotheby’s online event, a limited edition track-only 2020 Porsche with Martini racing team stripes sold for $1.3 million.

“I have seen a marked growth in the number of people who will actually buy a car, will spend tens of thousands, or maybe even up to a hundred thousand dollars or more, in some cases, for a car they’ve not seen,” said Donald Osborne, a collector car appraiser and CEO of the Audrain Automobile Museum in Newport, Rhode Island.  —more—

Formula1.com | Bahrain and Vietnam Grands Prix postponed

The Bahrain and Vietnam Grands Prix have been postponed due to the continued global spread of coronavirus. The races had been set for March 20-22 at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, and April 3-5 at the recently completed Hanoi Circuit.

The news follows the cancellation of this weekend’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix, and the previous postponement of the Chinese Grand Prix, which was due to be held April 17-19. — more—
