CNN style Architecture | Ferry transformed into a 450-ton floating mansion for Danish architect’s family

In the latest issue of Architectural Digest (AD) Danish architect Bjarke Ingels recalled that while on a video conference in his family home — which just happens to be a 450-ton ferry docked in Copenhagen — the caller asked if he was on a spaceship.

“People had warned me that living on a houseboat was simultaneously the best and worst thing,” Ingels said in the interview, which appears in the November issue of the magazine. “When it’s great, it’s epically great.” ..–read more—

Hotels offer free health care, doctors on demand and other Covid-19 safety amenities | CNN travel

CNN travel | Hotels offer free health care, doctors on demand and other Covid-19 safety amenities

(CNN) — What feels like a lifetime ago in the days before Covid-19, hotels lured travelers with amenities such as complimentary breakfasts, cocktail hours and yoga classes at the spa.

The world has changed quite a bit since then. Though people are beginning to tiptoe out from their Airbnbs and homes — away from stockpiled toilet paper, sourdough starter and new puppies — and even hop on planes, the travel industry recognizes the need to pivot.

Most properties are pledging best practices according to CDC and EPA guidelines such as frequent cleaning, air-filtration systems, contactless check-in and decreased capacity. Others are taking the opportunity to innovate, brainstorming new ways to make guests feel secure and relaxed, which range from luxe to odd.  —more—

This startup is taking on big banks. And it’s working. | CNN BUSINESS

CNN BUSINESS | This startup is taking on big banks. And it’s working.

Chime CEO and co-founder Chris Britt.

New York (CNN Business) – The economic forces set off by the pandemic are crushing traditional banks. Yet Chime, a startup taking aim at big banks, is booming. And it doesn’t have a single bank branch.

Chime, which provides banking services via a smartphone app, has more than tripled its transaction volume and revenue in 2020. The company says it is signing up hundreds of thousands of new customers each month, and some of them are ditching big banks for Chime.

And while big banks such as Wells Fargo (WFC) and Bank of America (BAC) have lost tens of billions of dollars in market value during the pandemic, Chime’s price tag is going parabolic.

Goldman Sachs: A Democratic sweep would mean faster economic recovery | CNN BUSINESS

CNN BUSINESS | Goldman Sachs: A Democratic sweep would mean faster economic recovery

New York (CNN Business) – President Donald Trump is once again warning voters that Democrats would “shut our economy and jobs down” if they win in November.

Goldman Sachs is telling its clients the exact opposite.

Just hours after Trump’s all-caps Monday morning tweet predicting economic disaster, Goldman economists pointed out that polls “suggest a ‘blue wave’ in which Democrats gain unified control of Washington is becoming more likely” — and they’re not suggesting investors dump stocks.

In fact, “all else equal, such a blue wave would likely prompt us to upgrade our forecasts,” Goldman Sachs chief economist Jan Hatzius wrote in a Monday report.  —more—

Official autopsy shows Black man killed by Los Angeles deputies was shot 16 times | CNN

CNN | Official autopsy shows Black man killed by Los Angeles deputies was shot 16 times

(CNN) – The official autopsy of Dijon Kizzee, a 29-year-old Black man killed by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies in August, has been released following a month-long security hold at the direction of the sheriff’s department.

The Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s autopsy report found that Kizzee was shot 16 times, with at least four of those bullets causing “rapidly life-threatening wounds.” Some of the wounds were to the head, torso and back, the report said.
Kizzee’s shooting sparked protests last month in South Los Angeles, a city that has already seen months-long unrest following the death of George Floyd while in Minneapolis police custody. “It’s happening so fast we can barely keep up with the hashtags,” Benjamin Crump, an attorney representing the Kizzee family, previously said of police shootings of Black people, evoking Floyd, Ahmaud ArberyBreonna Taylor and Jacob Blake.  —more—

CNN health | This is what happens to your body over months in isolation

(CNN) – Since the pandemic officially began in March, we’ve been told staying home is the best way to avoid catching Covid-19. And it is. But life in confinement can cause physical ailments on its own.

Being homebound for so long contorts the body, weakens the heart and lungs and even impairs brain function. The effects of life in isolation may stay with us beyond the pandemic’s end (whenever that may be).

This is what half a year of isolation, staying home and staying sedentary can do to your body.  —more—

F1 | Bottas eases to Sochi win over Verstappen as penalty leaves Hamilton P3

Valtteri Bottas wins for Mercedes-AMG

Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas scored his second win of 2020 at the Russian Grand Prix, benefitting from a penalty for his polesitting team mate Lewis Hamilton that left the six-time champion third at the flag, as Max Verstappen claimed Red Bull’s first ever podium at Sochi in P2.

Hamilton began the race on the back foot, after a pair of practice start infringements on his laps to the grid led to him being handed a 10s penalty mid-race, ruling him out of contention for the win, as he came home in P3.  —more

It’s a myth that women don’t want sex as they age, study finds | CNN health

CNN health | It’s a myth that women don’t want sex as they age, study finds

(CNN) – It’s a myth that women lose interest in sex as they enter midlife and beyond, according to new research that followed over 3,200 women for approximately 15 years.

“About a quarter of women rate sex as very important, regardless of their age,” said Dr. Holly Thomas, lead author of an abstract being presented during the 2020 virtual annual meeting of The North American Menopause Society, which opens on Monday, September 28.

“The study showed substantial numbers of women still highly value sex, even as they get older, and it’s not abnormal,” said Thomas, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.  —more—
