The Banksy painting that partially self-destructed at auction three years ago has sold once more, for a staggering £18.5 million ($25.4 million).

The new auction for “Love is in the Bin” took place at Sotheby’s Contemporary Art evening sale in London on Thursday and became the artist’s record, topping the sale of “Game Changer” one year ago. That artwork, which depicted health care workers as superheroes, sold for £16.7 million ($23.1 million) to benefit UK hospitals.  —read more—

(CNN) – Federal prosecutors in Kansas have launched a criminal grand jury investigation into a retired Kansas City police detective who is the subject of long-swirling allegations that he “exploited and terrorized” Black residents of the city’s north end for decades, CNN has learned.

Roger Golubski is accused of being “a dirty cop who used the power of his badge to exploit vulnerable black women, including black women who worked as prostitutes,” according to a 2019 civil complaint filed by a man exonerated of double murder charges investigated by Golubski. The veteran detective, who retired from the Kansas City, Kansas, police department in 2010 at the rank of captain, was also accused of being on the payroll of a local drug kingpin and of framing people for crimes they did not commit.  —read more—

New York (CNN Business) – Several of America’s largest financial firms reported strong earnings and revenue Thursday thanks to solid demand for loans, better credit quality and a boom in mergers and initial public offerings.

Morgan Stanley (MS), Citigroup (C), Bank of America (BAC) and even troubled Wells Fargo (WFC) posted healthy results that surpassed analysts’ expectations.

Shares of BofA were higher in early trading, while Morgan Stanley and Citi were flat. Wells Fargo’s stock fell.  —read more—

(CNN) – Black Americans are incarcerated in state prisons at nearly five times the rate of White Americans, according to a new report by The Sentencing Project.e report found that one in 81 Black adults per 100,000 people in the United States is serving time in a state prison, using data and projections from recent years from the US Census, the US Bureau of Justice Statistics and information provided directly from some states.

“Truly meaningful reforms to the criminal justice system cannot be accomplished without acknowledgement of its racist underpinnings,” Ashley Nellis, a senior research analyst for The Sentencing Project, wrote in the report. “Immediate and focused attention on the causes and consequences of racial disparities is required in order to eliminate them.”  —read more—

(CNN) – Social Security recipients will receive an annual cost of living adjustment of 5.9% next year, the largest increase since 1982, the Social Security Administration announced Wednesday.

The spike will boost retirees’ monthly payments by $92 to an estimated average of $1,657 for 2022.

“This would be the highest COLA that most beneficiaries living today have ever seen,” said Mary Johnson, Social Security and Medicare policy analyst for The Senior Citizens League.  —read more—

CNN BUSINESS | A record number of Americans are quitting their jobs

New York (CNN Business) – A record 4.3 million people quit their jobs in August, evidence of the considerable leverage workers have in today’s economy.

About 2.9% of the workforce quit in August, up from 2.7% in July, according to the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) report, released Tuesday. That marks the highest quit rate since the report began in 2000.

The number of workers who quit rose by 242,000 from July. Quits rose in accommodation and food services, wholesale trade and state and local government education.  —read more—

Washington, DC (CNN) – Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said the company will roll out the latest beta version of its “full self-driving” software to 1,000 owners this weekend.

Yet there aren’t actually any self-driving cars for sale today, according to autonomous vehicle experts and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which regulates cars. Tesla’s “full self-driving” is more like an enhanced cruise control, they say.

Videos posted on the internet by people who already have the feature unlocked show that it might stop for traffic lights and turn smoothly at intersections, but it also might veer toward pedestrians or confuse the moon for a traffic signal.  —read more
