Patrick Mahomes Calls Out ‘Weird’ Criticism of Black QBs After ‘Streetball’ Comment | B/R

B/R | Patrick Mahomes Calls Out ‘Weird’ Criticism of Black QBs After ‘Streetball’ Comment

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes spoke out Friday following recent criticism of himself and a pair of other Black signal-callers—Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens and Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals—while talking with reporters at training camp (h/t Adam Teicher of ESPN).

“Obviously, the Black quarterback has had to battle to be in this position that we are to have this many guys in the league playing. Every day, we’re proving that we should have been playing the whole time. We’ve got guys that can think just as well as they can use their athleticism. It’s always weird when you see guys like me, Lamar, Kyler kind of get that on them when other guys don’t. But at the same time we’re going out there to prove ourselves every day to show we can be some of the best quarterbacks in the league.”  read more

CNN US | North Carolina town’s entire police department quits after town hires Black city manager

Kenly, North Carolina (CNN) – The mass exodus of an entire police department after the hiring of a Black city manager in North Carolina has opened a conversation about public safety and race relations in a small town of just over 1,500 residents.

Last week, the entire police department in Kenly, North Carolina, resigned, citing a “hostile” work environment less than two months after Justine Jones, a Black woman, began her role as the town’s newly selected city manager.

Joy Wright, a local business owner, said the community is concerned about what the collective police retreat means for the future of the town. Wright also said she was mostly frustrated because the town hadn’t been keeping residents in the loop with any developments.  –read more–

CNN BUSINESS | This delivery startup was valued at more than $11 billion. Then it slashed thousands of workers

(CNN Business) – In early March, after two ultra-fast delivery startups shut down in New York City in a single week, a self-proclaimed pioneer in the space appeared to see an opportunity for some media attention.

Getir, a Turkish startup founded in 2015, had recently raised $768 million in funding valuing it at $11.8 billion, “cementing its position as a decacorn” even in the face of a “volatile” market, according to a representative for the company at the time. The representative suggested a reporter discuss with Getir’s CEO the future of the industry amid the “disappearance” of two smaller competitors.

Two months later, Getir slashed 14% of its global workforce, or nearly 4,500 employees, according to multiple reports at the time.  –read more–

F1 | Verstappen wins the 2022 French Grand Prix as pole-sitter Leclerc crashes out of the lead

Max Verstappen won the 2022 French Grand Prix for Red Bull after Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed out of the race on Lap 18 – walking away unscathed – as the Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell completed the podium at Paul Ricard.

High track temperatures meant tyre management was key at Le Castellet, and after Verstappen pitted on Lap 17, it was up to Leclerc to respond. A cruel snap of oversteer at Turn 11 spelled the end of his race – and cued a scream of frustration – before bringing out a Safety Car. Verstappen stayed out and inherited the lead, Hamilton and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez pitting and giving chase for the restart.  –read more–
