F1 | Verstappen leads Red Bull 1-2 as both Leclerc and Sainz retire in Azerbaijan
Max Verstappen led a Red Bull one-two in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after retirements for Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, giving Mercedes’ George Russell P3 at Baku.
Pole-sitter Charles Leclerc lost the lead at the start but regained it when the leading Red Bull of Max Verstappen pitted on Lap 19. One lap later, Leclerc’s race went up in a puff of smoke and he crawled back to the pits to retire. This would be Ferrari’s second retirement of the race as Carlos Sainz stopped with a hydraulic failure on Lap 9. –read more–

Charles Leclerc took pole position with a stunning lap in qualifying for the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, as Sergio Perez put himself on the front row in P2.
Leclerc set the ultimate benchmark of 1m 41.359s, going over two-tenths faster than Sergio Perez in a nailbiting Q3 session. Although he had provisional pole before that, Carlos Sainz couldn’t hook up his final effort and ended up fourth – behind Max Verstappen. –read more–

Pirelli have nominated the three softest tyre compounds in their range for this weekend’s 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit.
F1’s official tyre supplier has allocated the same range of tyre compound that were brought to last year’s race, with the teams again set to receive the C3 hard tyre (x2 sets), C4 medium tyre (x3 sets), and the C5 soft tyre (x8 sets). –read more–

F1 | Perez beats Vettel to Baku victory after Verstappen crashes out from lead late on
Max Verstappen looked set to take his first first-ever Azerbaijan Grand Prix victory before he crashed out from the lead with just five laps to go – giving Sergio Perez a second career victory, as Lewis Hamilton locked up on the penultimate lap to finish 15th in a hugely dramatic race in Baku.
For the first time this season, Charles Leclerc led away from pole, but he was passed for the lead by Lewis Hamilton with no need for DRS, so strong was the tow, on Lap 2. Verstappen then swept by the Ferrari man on Lap 7.
Verstappen took the lead after a crucial sequence of pit stops, Hamilton starting that sequence on Lap 12 with a slow switch for hards thanks to traffic in the pit lane. Verstappen pitted a lap later and emerged first, followed by Perez who split the championship rivals. And the Dutchman seemed to have victory in the bag, mastering a Lap 35 Safety Car restart after Lance Stroll's terrifying accident, when the Aston Martin driver's left-rear tyre appeared to gave way on the pit straight. –read more--

F1 | Leclerc takes shock pole in dramatic Baku qualifying session as FIVE drivers crash out
Charles Leclerc delivered some impressive pace and benefitted from a tow from Lewis Hamilton to take a sensational pole position for Sunday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix in what was a thrilling qualifying session that saw five crashes and four red flags.
It comes just a couple of weeks after he took pole in his home race in Monaco, only to be forced to retire before the race had even started with a mechanical issue caused by his crash in qualifying – with reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton bouncing back from a poor Friday to join the Ferrari on the front row in Baku.
Hamilton made the decision to switch to a low downforce rear wing ahead of qualifying, having struggled to find any performance on a single lap in the preceding practice sessions, and it paid off as he starts second for the third consecutive race in Baku. --read more--

Tire Allocations

A pair of high-speed crashes for Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and race leader Max Verstappen – from which both drivers emerged unharmed – turned the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix on its head. But with both drivers appearing to have suffered left-rear blowouts, Pirelli boss Mario Isola told media after the race that he believed debris on track at Baku was the cause.
On Lap 30 of the race, Stroll had just passed the site of his Q1 crash from Saturday when he appeared to suffer a blowout near the pit entry and spun violently into the wall, bringing out a Safety Car.
Following the subsequent race restart, Verstappen was then leading with five laps to go when he suffered his own blowout going down the main straight, the Dutchman also spearing into the wall after his left-rear tyre appeared to let go.
But Pirelli’s Head of F1 and Car Racing didn’t believe that tyre wear had been the issue in either incident, with Mario Isola telling the media: “I believe I can exclude that failures were due to tyre wear, because it's not a matter of tyre wear….
